My path through medicine has been anything but conventional.

From Resilience to Mastery: How OnlineMedEd Supported My Unconventional Medical Journey

Tanya Kondolay, MD, MPH

My path through medicine has been anything but conventional. I began my journey many years ago, and through persistence, passion, and an unwavering commitment to patient-centered care, I have worked my way towards becoming a public health and preventive medicine physician. But
my story is more than just medicine; it’s a symphony of disciplines, a fusion of science and art, and a relentless pursuit of innovation.

Along the way, I completed an MPH in Health Policy and Administration, illustrated for the First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 textbook, and received a medical education grant to define the term Humanity Health within medicine—an endeavor to weave compassion and holistic care into the
very fabric of healthcare. I helped develop WIRE (Windsor Institute of Research and Education) at my medical school, establishing a research department that now conducts clinical trials in which medical students can actively participate in the United States. My dedication to scholarly pursuits extends beyond WIRE; I have published research that contributes to the evolving landscape of medical knowledge.

Beyond academia, I founded Dr. Wonder Why, a children’s book series that merges medicine and the arts with a Renaissance ethos for public health and prevention. I created Sapere Bloom, a platform that strengthens the biopsychosocial model through music, and I even honed my craft at Juilliard, intertwining melody with medicine as I pursue my passion as both an aspiring physician and an artist. My upcoming novel, Lavender, delves into the depths of human emotion, expanding on Kübler-Ross’s five stages of grief. Meanwhile, my podcast, Unraveling Medicine, bridges the gap between medicine, music, and storytelling. Additionally, I established East & Holm, a platform dedicated to embedding preventive medicine into everyday life to promote holistic well-being.

How OnlineMedEd Became My Anchor

Navigating multiple institutions, preclinical and clinical years, and ever-changing landscapes, I needed a constant: a North Star in the shifting tides of medical education. OnlineMedEd became that anchor, providing structure when I needed it most.

During my core rotations, OnlineMedEd’s Acquire videos laid the bedrock of my knowledge before I stepped onto the wards. The whiteboard notes? Absolute alchemy, transforming complex topics into digestible, visual gold. As an illustrator, I found these learning tools invaluable. They weren’t just notes; they were maps guiding me through the labyrinth of clinical medicine, turning rote memorization into a journey of discovery.

Balancing Clinicals, Research, and Exam Prep

Juggling research initiatives, clinical rotations, and board exam preparation demanded not just efficiency but a finely tuned symphony of time management. My study schedule became a carefully orchestrated routine:

  • Morning: Reviewing OME videos and Prime Notes before heading to the hospital
  • During clinicals: Using OME whiteboard notes for quick reference and reinforcing my learning by applying concepts to patient cases
  • Evening: Completing UWorld and NBME questions, then revisiting OME content to solidify weak areas
  • Pre-exam prep: Structuring my study blocks around OME’s clinical reasoning framework to integrate concepts across disciplines

This wasn’t just about passing exams; it was about mastering the art of clinical reasoning. By infusing OME’s content into my daily practice, I wasn’t just learning. I was transforming into a clinician who could connect the dots, anticipate outcomes, and think beyond textbooks.

Looking Ahead

Medicine, to me, is more than a profession. It’s a canvas, a stage, and a lifelong pursuit of understanding the human condition. My passion lies in preventive medicine, public health, and medical education. Through these fields, I aim to blend research, creativity, and innovation to redefine how we approach healthcare. I plan to pursue a public health fellowship and become board-certified in Preventive Medicine. I want to push boundaries at the intersection of education, policy, and patient care.

If you’re forging your own path in medicine, whether it’s winding, unconventional, or entirely uncharted, remember this: your journey is yours to sculpt. Adapt. Persist. Never stop learning. OnlineMedEd gave me the structure I needed. Ultimately, however, it was my willingness to embrace every challenge that shaped me into the physician I am becoming.

Trust me, if I can carve my own path through the chaos, so can you. Where there is a will, there is a way—even if you have to build the road yourself
