Detroit’s Cedric Mutebi has been named the second recipient of OnlineMedEd’s Scholarship for Future Black Physicians.

A third-year MD student at Wayne State University School of Medicine, the 22-year-old impressed OnlineMedEd’s scholarship selection committee with his ‘on-the-ground’ work and advocacy in Detroit, a series of thought-provoking written essays and a video highlighting his hometown’s racial history in medicine.

That video saw Mutebi present from Detroit’s Dunbar Hospital. Opened by groundbreaking Black physician Dr. James Ames in 1917, the hospital was the first in Detroit dedicated to Black healthcare.

A former HIV test administrator at Detroit Receiving Hospital, Mutebi was the co-founder of Healing Between the Lines, an anti-racism sub-curriculum that trains WSU School of Medicine residents on social accountability. He is also involved in several mentorship programs at WSU and within his local community.

Jamie Fitch, OnlineMedEd’s co-founder and chief executive, says Mutebi was a clear stand-out amongst an outstanding group of scholarship finalists.

“Cedric’s commitment to his peers, community, and profession awed us,” Fitch says. “He’s working at every level to enact and advocate changes that will make our healthcare system stronger. He’s a model example for the next generation of physicians that we seek to empower.”

Mutebi will receive $12,000 from OnlineMedEd. Chris McNeil, now an emergency medicine resident at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in Tulsa, was the first to receive the scholarship, in 2020.
